K-12 Physical Education
Ohio’s physical education academic content standards provide clear, rigorous expectations for all students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Physical education is a critical component of a complete education. Beyond the physical benefits, quality physical education has been linked to cognitive, effective and quality of life benefits for students at elementary, middle and high school levels.
The six National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) standards were adopted by the State Board of Education in December 2007. These standards represent physical education content that all students should know and be able to do as they progress through a kindergarten through grade 12 program.
Content Standards:
Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in motor skill and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
Standard 2: Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.
Standard 3: Participates regularly in physical activity.
Standard 4: Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.
Standard 5:Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings.
Standard 6: Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self expression and/or social interaction. The six standards are interrelated and should be viewed holistically – each standard contributing to a comprehensive physical education program.
Success in meeting the expectations of physical education standards depends on students’ opportunities to receive instruction on a regular basis and to engage in active participation in physical activity both inside and outside of an academic setting. Providing ample time to be physically active will contribute to overall well being.
At the end of high school, all students should be equipped to sustain healthy, energetic lifestyles and engage in enjoyable, meaningful free-time pursuits. (From ODE Website)
