Course Descriptions:
Physical Education – ¼ Credit/1 Semester Physical Education
This course is a graduation requirement for all students. Students must pass .5 credit of physical education. A comprehensive subject area which incorporates fundamental motor skills, body control and balance, physical fitness, leisure sports and game skills, cognitive skills, as well as nutrition management. A healthy lifestyle is an active lifestyle. “Let’s Move” will require students to actively be involved in daily movement such as walking and participating in traditional sporting activities. Students will learn vocabulary and concepts related to the class. These will include: FITT Principle, Target Heart Rate, Flexibility and BMI Calculations, Aerobic Exercise, Static Stretching, and more All students will complete Fitness Journals, Nutrition Journals and weekly vocabulary.
Nutrition & Physical Fitness A/B Nutrition & Physical Fitness A/B-
A: ½ Credit/1st Semester. B: ½ Credit/2nd Semester
This 10th grade elective class will require the completion of workouts with classroom material covering all fundamentals of weight training with safety procedures stressed. The functions of various muscle groups will be reinforced and students will be introduced to the weight room for strength training and aerobic endurance. Students will learn vocabulary and concepts related to the class: FITT Principle, Heart Rate, Muscular Endurance, Muscular Strength, Aerobic Endurance, Injury Prevention, Ten Basic Muscles of the Body.
Fitness for Life Fitness for Life A/B -
A: ½ Credit/1st Semester. B: ½ Credit/2nd Semester
This 11th Grade elective class will require the completion of workouts with classroom material covering all fundamentals of weight training with safety procedures stressed and enforced. “Let’s Move” is a concept where students will be introduced to lifetime activities such as Yoga, Pilates and Dynamic Movement. Students will identify the difference between Aerobic and Anaerobic activities. Students will research equipment related to fitness such as: kettle bells, stretch bands, medicine balls, bosu balls, stair masters, treadmills, etc.. They will understand the equipment and it's relationship to the body. Students will learn vocabulary and concepts related to the class like: Voluntary vs Involuntary Muscles, Resting vs Maximum Heart Rate, Static vs Dynamic Stretching.
Sports Science Sports Science 9/12 –
9: ½ Credit/2nd Semester. 12: ½ Credit/2nd Semester
This elective class will required the completion of workouts with classroom material covering all fundamentals of weight training with safety procedures stressed and enforced. It is important for students to understand the science of movement and muscles. The ten common muscles will be introduced and identified with machines used in the weight room. The effects of sports and exercise on health and fitness along with the prevention/treatment of athletic injuries will be covered. This is an introductory class to fitness. Students will learn vocabulary and concepts important to the class.
